"commentText": "I too had an occasion to watch monies that we contributed, go in the wrong direction. I recall when the Brentwood School Athletic campus was being constructed and we all questioned, \"who the hell gave them to ok to take up that piece of VA property\"?... well, the Director, at that time felt that HE was doing the school a favor by leasing it and therefore, he went forward with the lease. The $$$, I believe went into the GENERAL FUND... which is usually someone's personal piggy bank... just saying I'm so glad to see some serious investigations bringing positive changes.",

"commentText": "The missing money will take years to find, if it is found at all. The existing schools, parks, etc. will not be torn down. The more important question is where do we go from here?  Wouldn't a more immediate and effective goal be to legally take charge of and then redirect the funds generated from these existing leases toward the original goal and original purpose of housing disabled Veterans? The express purpose of the land was for this very task and therefore any funds generated by the leases should be used to that end. These monies would fund the roads, utilities, and infrastructure Dan Garcia describes. The funds could also be used to further the investigation of the missing monies. I was a Homeless Veteran in 2015-2016 but just graduated from West Virginia University on 15 Dec. 2018 at the age 59 with the help of numerous programs. The programs were absolutely essential to my success. I was an \"A\" student and plan to attend Law School in 2019. I wish so desperately that I was already finished with Law School so that I might be able to help in some way with the many problems encountered by Veterans on their varied roads back from Homelessness. In a few years I will hopefully be able to do that very thing.",

"commentText": "Very comprehensive article.  The obvious big hole is where did all of the money go that was received for leasing the land?  Hard to believe that with all of the talent that is in place an audit can't determine this.  My guess would be that there is some official who owes the VA a lot of money and probably belongs in jail.  I would guess that if money could be retrieved that this whole project could be made to move more quickly.",

"commentText": "As a former fraud investigator at VA West Los Angeles and surrounding VA Medical Centers, I can tell you there were MANY criminal offenders both working and contracting services during my era there. Problem I faced; it was a politically charged environment for my position. Many offender's working in financial positions did not complete background checks, including doctor's, nursing staff and other personnel having contact with patient's, finances, campus filming and movies completed at the VA. I had success in tracing and referring cases thru the legal system but always ran into political obstacles by administrators and other leadership caught defrauding or collecting unauthorized funds. After giving the best efforts of my career there I had to move on to another larger federal agency in order to have free range in prosecution. During my career there I was able to provide 5.4 million in two years of cost savings measures from fraud, fines, forfeitures and prosecution. ",
